L.A.'s First Chuch of the Nazarene
Filipino . . . Walk By Faith
Los Angeles First Church of the Nazarene - Filipino Congregation is located 1 block East of the busy intersection of 3rd Street and Vermont near downtown Los Angeles. The church has been ministering in Cental Los Angeles for over 100 years, started by Dr. Phineas Bresee, the church's founder, in 1895. The brick building at the present location was constructed in 1953. Dr. Bresee was a former Methodist Minister who loved and cared for the poor, and prior to serving as LA First Nazarene's first pastor serving as the Senior Pastor of Pasadena First United Methodist Church. The International Church of the Nazarene has expanded over the years, and in 2005 had an international membership of 1,496,296 representing over 13,600 congregations around the world.
There are four congregations partnering in ministry as the Los Angeles First Church of the Nazarene. The Multi-Cultural English congregation, headed by senior pastor Paul Huddle, meets every Sunday at 9:00 am, and the Spanish congregation under pastor David Iglesia meet at 10:45 am in the Sanctuary. The Filipino-English and the Korean congregations both worship in Wiley chapel - 9:45 am and 11:30 am respectively. These four congregations have their own distinct governing church board, but each congregation contributes leadership and finances to govern the Multi-Congregational Board (MCB) for the purpose of overseeing the main use and functions of the building and overall ministries. The four congregations unite in worship on regular occasions throughout the year.
The Walk By Faith Church of the Nazarene:
Our church is also called Walk By faith Church of the Nazarene in order to emphasize the significance that Christians are called upon by God to walk on this earth by faith in Christ alone and not by sight. Our purpose is to bring people to the saving knowledge of Jesus by presenting the good news of salvation and then encourage them to be part of the church family, develop them into Christ-like maturity, involve them into worship and equip them for their distinct ministry so that they can be a living witness to the world. Our vision is to share the light of the transforming message of Jesus Christ into a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment within Los Angeles and the surrounding areas.
We meet regularly for worship every Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. while the Bible study, prayer and cell group is done every Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Praise and worship practice is every Friday evening. The young people meet every Thursday as well while the Young Adults or yuppies is every other Fridays at the church. There are ongoing Bible studies by our volunteer church workers in different parts of Los Angeles and its vicinity.
Being in the heart of Los Angeles has a lot of opportunities and challenges as swell. For one thing, not far away is LAX which is the entry point of most of the incoming immigrants from all over the world especially Filipinos who desire to have a better life in the United States. They start their lives here in L.A. and after several years, once stable, they relocate to different places. These Filipinos are noted for their skills in the nursing professions, medical and technological works that can easily blend themselves due to their great adaptability with the new culture. They have left their loved ones in the Philippines to find a better life in the US. Most of them are lonely and in need of fellowship. It is these new immigrants that we want to reach for Christ especially those who have no church home.
If you are within the vicinity of Los Angeles area one Sunday morning, please come and join us for worship.
